Horse & Carriage Rides

Carriage Strolls of the Shoals has a place in Wilson Park (at the corner of Tombigbee and Seminary) where they meet people and take them for carriages through downtown and some of the historic neighborhoods. Bob and Fred, the horses who pull the carriages, only work on Friday and Saturday evenings during enjoyable weather. Meet them at the park after 5:30 pm. Call (256) 767-7175.

Historians Lee Freeman and Richard Sheridan will present a special program about Franklin D. Roosevelt and his historic visits that changed the Shoals area forever. W.C. Handy Music Festival

A week-long Jazz and Blues Festival with over 160 events (most are free of charge). Most of these events take place in Wilson Park, Mobile Plaza and McFarland Park, in downtown Florence. On Sunday at sundown, the event starts with the song "I Hate to See the Evening Sun Go Down", and is held at the Handy Home Museum. All week, there are the "At Sundown" concerts, which are free early-evening performance in Wilson Park. On Wednesday there is a noon performance at Wilson Park. Thursday and Friday is "Handy on the Plaza", 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with box lunches available. Friday evening in McFarland Park is "Handy's by the River". The Saturday morning "Street Strut" parades through downtown Florence and comes to a colorful end in Wilson Park. A delightful weekend filled with magic! Wilson Park becomes "Fountain-on-Green", site of the legendary market of the ancient city of Florence. Pageantry abounds as the Royal family enjoys its last day on the throne before being ousted by the new King and Queen. Admission is free.
