The beauty of the spoken and written word waits for an individual, one
who delights in knowing and using English fundamentals to express
his thoughts. Helen Keller overcame almost insurmountable obstacles
in spite of her inability to see or hear. She, however, learned to
write and to speak correctly and effectively. With effort and study,
one may know basic English and be pleased with the accomplishment, the
results.
Our study of English fundamentals will begin at the beginning: words — Every
word, all of the words in oour language, myriads, thousands
upon thousands, fall into catagories, parts of speech. Words, according
to their function or use in a sentence, are divided into eight catagories,
parts of speech. The parts of speech are nouns, pronouns, adjectives,
verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Sometimes
a word will fit into two or more parts of speech. We shall illustrate
later.
If a person locks his thumbs, there will be eight fingers free. A
convenient way to remember the parts of the speech is to name one for each
finger. Begin with the little finger on the left hands.
